'Landmark' rooflight for historic market

The historic covered market in Chorley, Lancashire has undergone a refurbishment programme which has included the installation of an impressive bespoke glazed canopy by Roofglaze Limited.

Part of a local tradition stretching back to the late fifteenth century, the covered market provides a unique shopping experience with over 100 stalls offering a wide variety of goods.

The new 64m long canopy comprises a series of five overlapping ridgelights, providing cover from the elements for shoppers and stallholders.

Dramatic raised peaks on the two end ridgelights protrude above the street entrances to welcome shoppers. These sections are glass, with the aluminium framework finished in red polyester powder coating, to match the vibrant brand identity of Chorley Markets. Glass gable ends carry the Chorley Markets logo, etched into the glass.

Spans range from 4.0m to 5.2m and the whole structure is supported by a steel framework that raises the canopy above the level of the adjacent slate-hung pitched roofs. During rainfall, water runs off the canopies onto the pitched roofs and into the guttering for the roofs.

The three central ridgelight sections are glazed in UV protected multiwall polycarbonate sheet, giving high light transmission with pleasantly diffused light – ideal conditions in which to display the goods for sale below.

“When the decision was taken to refurbish the covered market, we took the opportunity to create a landmark that would reflect the importance of the market to the town’s heritage”, said Danny Manicolo (job title) at Liberata, Chorley Council. “We’re delighted with the end result and we have been impressed with the professionalism of the design and installation teams at Roofglaze”, he continued.

The project was completed in late 2009, with much of the work being undertaken whilst the market remained open.

Based in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, Roofglaze Limited is one of the UK’s leading providers of rooflights and skylights, offering a complete range from modular domes and pyramids, to continuous barrel vaults, ridgelights, lantern lights and bespoke designs.
