The BBC Cardiff relocation project has taken steps toward it’s overall completion, with Roofglaze completing their part of the £120m development project on-time and on-budget.
Roofglaze was instrumental in the design and installation of a glazed roof above the atrium of the BBC Cardiff HQ, this was a especially complex project due to the unique specifications given by the architects Foster + Partners. Fosters required the glazing system transoms to span 4500mm between the main structural steels, this is a very unusual request for a roof glazing project and required some very specific glazing specifications to satisfy.
For this project Roofglaze supplied and installed over 700m² of Schüco FW80+ Monopitch Rooflights, all of which were rated for non-fragility to CWCT TN66 & TN67 Class 1.
The rest of the project is scheduled for completion in late 2018 or early 2019 and will be able to house around 1,200 staff members at any one time. Due to the high quantity of staff using the building it was considered key by architects Foster + Partners to ensure we were creating; a comfortable, safe environment which would avoid overheating, thus the following glazing specification was required:
Outer: 10.0mm Thick Toughened and Heat Soak Tested Pilkington Suncool Pro T 50/25 High Performance Solar Control Glass
Cavity: 16mm Argon Filed Cavity with Silver Spacer Bar and Silicone Edge Seal
Inner: 13.5mm Thick Clear Laminated and Heat Strengthened Glass. Constructed with 2 x 6.0mm Clear Heat Strengthened glass with a 20% white Ceramic Dot Frit Pattern and a 1.5 mm Lonomer / Sentryglass High Strength Interlayer
Glazing Performance Specification:
Centre Pane U-value = 1.03 W/m²K
Light Transmission = 39%
G-value = 23%
Overall System U-value = 1.5 W/m²K
