A centre of excellence offers bright prospects for a new generation
A brand new state-of-the art training centre at Middlesbrough College has opened its doors to welcome a new generation of students and trainees. The £12 million facility is delivering world-class training to young people who want to work in the area of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
Bright internal spaces are at the heart of the purpose-built STEM centre, the only one of its kind in the North East of England. Lit and ventilated by VELUX Modular Skylights, the light and airy environment provides the ideal atmosphere for studying.
Letting the light flood in
Offering tailor-made courses for apprentices as well as those already working in industry, the innovative new STEM centre is part of the response to the skills shortage facing British industry. It is extremely well equipped and boasts a genuine industrial environment in which to train and develop.
The VELUX Modular Skylights solution chosen by the building’s architects, the Bond Bryan Partnership, consists of both fixed and venting modules. The result is that workspaces, which are often hard to light, are flooded with natural daylight and can be ventilated with fresh air. The comfortable, bright and healthy indoor ambience leaves students and teachers able to focus on the job at hand: boosting the technical skills and prospects of a new generation.
A brighter tomorrow in an innovative building
Contractors, the ESH Group, demolished a derelict property on the site to make way for the striking three storey building, complete with a café at ground level and associated parking and landscaping.
“Whilst working through a value engineering process with Roofglaze Ltd, we chose to use VELUX Modular Skylights instead of a site assembled curtain wall type system on our STEM Building project at Middlesbrough College. The system has a number of unique details that allow rapid installation, however it is vital that the design of the steelwork and adjacent trades are co-ordinated at an early stage to take full advantage of these features. This is the first time we have used this pre-fabricated system and it is clearly an excellent product.”

Seeking to combine an abundance of daylight and natural ventilation with an excellent energy performance, they chose VELUX Modular Skylights, an all-in-one frame and glass solution with one of the lowest overall U-values available
Nine assemblies of 7° pitch VELUX Longlight were supplied and installed by Roofglaze Ltd, each with a combination of fixed and venting modules, as follows:
• Five pieces, each with three fixed and two venting modules (with motor) – height 1000mm, width 1000mm
• Four pieces, each with three fixed and three venting modules (with motor) – height of 1000mm, width 1000mm
When in place, the motorised mechanisms for the VELUX venting modules are cleverly concealed in the slim profiles, meaning users benefit from localised climate control without having to sacrifice the uniform visual appeal.
The VELUX Modular Skylights were delivered to site in the precise order in which they were to be installed, simplifying the process considerably. Coupled with the fact that the modular system is prefabricated and fully tested before delivery – and comes complete with installation brackets and clamps – Roofglaze were able to fix the Longlights into place quickly and precisely, thus minimising the time on site and the impact of the weather. It was then a simple matter to install the flashing, also pre-fabricated for a perfect fit, and ensure the whole assembly was 100% waterproof.
Work on the building began in June 2014 and, thanks in part to the trouble-free installation process of the VELUX Modular Skylights, the project was completed a little over a year later, in July 2015.
The first students arrived two months later, ready to learn in a building that offers a bright today and an even brighter tomorrow.
