Rooflights maximise light and space at the prestigious Bearsden House

This Grade II listed building stands tall in Barnsbury, Islington, North London, blending traditional and modern architecture in a sophisticated style. Previously the property was constructed in the 1830s and extended in the 1980s. However, it needed a modern refresh. To achieve this, Dominic McKenzie Architects renovated the rear part of the building. Additionally, they created a two-storey rear extension that resembles a tower. Consequently, this addition inspired the building’s name.

The renovation resulted in a 2½ storey rear extension, a bathroom, a dining room, a kitchen, and a rear garden. Notably, Roofglaze supplied custom flat glass rooflights, bringing in natural light and are a standout feature of the Tower House.

In 2019, the design of Tower House won a Don’t Move to Improve Award for Best Historic Intervention. Furthermore, it was also shortlisted for the Architect’s Journal Retrofit Awards.
